Me 2.0

Me 2.0

Philippians 3:21 “He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.”

Everyday in my clinic I see humans in their state of decay and suffering that is part of our current world- people coming in with back pain, rashes, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression, cancer, you name it. I look at my own aging and misshapen body and long for a transformation. The good news is our bodies will get a renovation right along with heaven and earth. As the verse above mentions, our glorious bodies will be fashioned after Jesus’ body, which the bible tells us was fully recognizable but fully amazing with abilities our earthly bodies don’t currently possess.

Some people believe when we die we become angels, but this is absolutely not true or biblical. Angels are ancient, created beings that serve the Lord. We are human. We don’t become angels, we don’t get wings and halos any more than Satan is a red guy with a tail and a pitchfork. Our bodies will be like the renovated earth- the same in many ways yet so different as it will be removed of the ravages of the Curse and sin. Gone will be disease, aging, deformity and pain. Instead, we will be bright, luminous healthy beings with all of our senses restored to their fullest and maybe even enhanced!

Most of us would be thrilled to never need glasses or hearing aids again, but what if our vision was so sharp and crisp that we saw shape, form and color in a whole new way? What if our hearing was not only restored to perfection but upgraded in such a way that when we heard the songs of the heavenly hosts, it would be unlike anything we could ever imagine? Our taste buds will no longer be dull, but alive so that flavors burst in our mouths in a spectacular way! Our sense of touch, our strength, our agility, our own singing voices- all will be perfected to resemble that of our Lord.

When I care for a patient with a severe physical or mental handicap, I often picture meeting them in heaven with their glorious new bodies. I long to have conversations with them, to see their personality and sense of humor revealed and to see them run and jump in a way they were never able to. We are all bound by the limitations on our own individual bodies. How awesome it will be to live eternally, free of the restrictions of disease and decay? Even on our best days, we are always held back to some extent by our broken down bodies but that will be resolved soon enough!

Picture challenging your grandfather that passed on years ago to a race or watching your grandmother who was in a wheelchair for the last few years of her life pass you by doing back handsprings? What about simply being able to walk for as long as you need to or want to and never growing tired or achy? Will we walk or run with super human speed or will we be able to walk through walls and simply appear in another location as Jesus did? I don’t know, but I do know that we will be given everything we will ever need to fully engage in all that Jesus has created for us in eternity and THAT is exciting!

    • It IS so exciting! I’m glad God didn’t reveal too much in his word about all the details because it is fun to wonder. No matter what we know it will be better than we could ever imagine!
